The content of benzene and toluene in gasoline directly determines the quality of
gasoline. Besides, BTEX have been classified as toxic compounds and it is significant
to know their concentration in gasoline for evaluating health hazard to the people
handling and using gasoline. A small amount of benzene in gasoline can increase
its octane number but benzene, a carcinogen which enters the atmosphere due to
evaporation or incomplete combustion, can harm people’s health. Therefore, the
content determination has become one of the basis for the quality control of finished
gasoline products. The newly published National Fifth Stage vehicle gasoline
standard requires that the benzene content in gasoline must be less than 1.0%.
